Why is my microwave sparking?

Common causes include foil, twist ties, metal-trimmed dishes, a rack touching the cavity, burnt food, a damaged waveguide cover, chipped cavity coating, door damage, or an internal high-voltage fault.

Is a sparking microwave dangerous?

Yes. Continued arcing can burn the cavity, damage the waveguide or magnetron area, ignite residue, and create smoke or fire. Stop the cycle immediately and do not keep testing a damaged oven.

Can I use the microwave after removing the metal object?

Only if the cause was obvious, the cavity and door are undamaged, no burn mark or smoke remains, and the owner manual permits a safe test. If sparks return, stop and disconnect power.

What is the small panel inside my microwave?

It may be the waveguide cover, which protects the opening that carries microwave energy into the cavity. If it is burnt, cracked, swollen, or has a hole, do not remove it or operate the oven.

Can I paint over a chipped microwave interior?

Do not use ordinary paint. Minor coating repairs require a manufacturer-approved material and a sound cavity. Rust, pitting, burn-through, or repeated arcing needs professional evaluation.

Should I repair or replace a sparking microwave?

Repair may suit a newer built-in unit with limited, serviceable damage. Replacement is often wiser for an older countertop model with cavity, door, magnetron, inverter, or smoke damage.
