1. Gather the Necessary Supplies
Before you get started, there are some supplies that you’ll need to gather together. This will eliminate the need to have to try to find a tool when you’ve already got the door off your oven.
You’ll need:
- Flat tip screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Nut driver
- Work gloves
- Scraper
- Glass cleaner
- Towels for padding
- Cleaning cloths
2. Remove Your Oven Door
The first step of the cleaning process is to remove the oven door. You should find the specific instructions for your oven model in your owner’s manual. For most models, you will need to open the door all the way and then use a slot screwdriver to pry the locking tabs down into the unlocked position on either side of the door.
Partially close the oven door to approximately one quarter open and gripping both sides of the door lift it up and out.
Set the door down on a padded surface with the inner panel upwards.
3. Disassemble the Oven Door
Oven doors may vary according to the model, but generally, you will need to remove the screws which secure the handle and vent on the top of the door to pull off the handle. You will then need to carefully flip the door over to lift the side trim rails slightly and remove the vent. Remove the screws which secure the bottom door trim and you should now be able to lift the outer door panel. Set this aside with the inner surface facing upward on a padded surface.
4. Clean the Glass
Now you have the door disassembled, you can clean the glass. Depending on the surface, you may need to use a scraper, glass cleaner or other cleaning method. Just bear in mind that if the glass has a textured coating, you should avoid using a scraper.
You should clean the outer middle door glass and inner middle door glass to remove any spills, drips or stains.
If the door has double panes of glass, you may need to remove the bracket screws and hinges to access the inner surfaces of the glass.
5. Clean the Interior Oven Door Glass
If the inner side of the glass on the outer door panel has streaks from a spill, clean it with glass cleaner. If the surface has a textured coating like this glass, don’t use a scraper to remove spills. Scraping can damage the textured coating.
Clean the outer surface of the middle door glass if it’s dirty. This middle glass surface doesn’t have a textured coating, so you can use a scraper to loosen food streaks.
If the inner surface of the middle door glass has grease drips or you see spills on other inner door glass surfaces, remove the bracket screws and lift off the middle door glass with the brackets still attached. Set the middle door glass and bracket on a padded surface and clean the inner surface.
6. Reassemble Your Oven Door
Once you have the glass cleaned and dried, you can reassemble the door. Essentially, you’ll be reversing the procedure you used to disassemble it. Just bear in mind that if you do get to a point where you are unsure about reassembly, be sure to contact an appliance repair technician to help you.
